ESI – Home Delivery Schedule II & Various Others- Disruption

Express Scripts Pharmacy to discontinue dispensing Schedule II opioids and six non-opioid medications, effective July 1

The decision has been made to discontinue dispensing both brand and generic forms of the following medications, effective July 1:

  • – All Schedule II opioids (559 NDCs currently dispensed at EXP)-
  • – Venofer (iron sucrose)
  • – Stromectol (ivermectin)
  • – Cipro-HC (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and hydrocortisone suspension)
  • – Gleostine (lomustine)
  • – Zylet (loteprednol and tobramycin)
  • – Phenergan with Codeine (promethazine with codeine solution)
Patient Communications

Beginning April 30, patients affected by this change will be notified by email or letter. Patients who filled a prescription for one of these medications at EXP in the last 90 days will receive a communication explaining that as of July 1, Express Scripts Pharmacy will no longer fill their prescriptions for that medication because they will not be stocked by the pharmacy. The patient communication will encourage them to access a link to view in-network retail pharmacies near them where they may fill their prescription. EXP will send a second round of these notifications to patients on June 2.

If a patient calls in after receiving the communication, they will have the option to discuss potential alternative medications with a pharmacist or to transfer their prescription to an alternative retail pharmacy.

Patient Experience as of July 1

If a patient sends in a new prescription or requests a refill or renewal for a medication on this list, the order will not be processed, and the patient will receive a cancellation communication via their existing channel preference. The communication will instruct the patient to fill their prescription from an alternative pharmacy, such as a retail location in their community.

If the patient does not take the steps described above and attempts to fill a prescription for one of these medications at EXP, the front-end pharmacy team will reach out to the prescriber and/or patient to see if they want to switch to an alternative medication, if appropriate.

The cancellation message they will receive is:

“We can’t fill your [drug name] prescription because we do not fill this medication at home delivery. Please ask your doctor to send a new prescription to an in-network pharmacy, or the pharmacy may contact us to start a transfer (if allowable). Find an in-network pharmacy at esrx.com.”
